How to Apply for the NDIS: A Simple Guide

Applying for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can seem like a daunting process, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re applying for yourself or on behalf of someone else, understanding the steps involved is key to a smooth and successful application. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know—from checking eligibility to submitting your application and understanding how an NDIS plan is created. With the right information and preparation, you can make the process smoother and ensure you or your loved one receive the right support to live a more independent and fulfilling life.

Applying for the NDIS

1. Eligibility Criteria

Before you apply, it’s important to check whether you or your loved one meet the NDIS eligibility requirements: To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • Be under the age of 65 when applying.

  • Be an Australian citizen, hold a permanent resident visa, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa (for New Zealand citizens living in Australia)

  • Have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.

  • Need support from a person or equipment to participate in everyday activities.

2. How to Apply for the NDIS

The application process involves several steps:

  • Step 1: Check Eligibility
Before applying, check if the person meets the above eligibility criteria. If they do, proceed with the application process.

  • Step 2: Prepare the Required Documents
    Applicants will need to provide:

    • Proof of identity

    • Medical evidence of the disability

    • Evidence of how the disability impacts daily living activities.

  • Step 3: Complete the Access Request Form: https://www.ndis.gov.au/applying-access-ndis/how-apply

This form can be completed online, by phone, or by requesting a paper copy. The form asks for personal details, medical history, and details about the impact of the disability on daily life.

  • Step 4: Submit the Application
Once the Access Request Form is completed, it is submitted to the NDIS for review. NDIS may contact the applicant for further information or clarification.

3. What Happens After You Apply?

After submitting the application:

  • The NDIS will review the application and may ask for more information or evidence to support the eligibility claim.

  • The NDIS will send a letter to tell the applicant about the decision. This is called an ‘access decision’.

  • If approved, the applicant will be contacted to arrange a planning meeting to discuss their support and funding needs.

  • If the application is unsuccessful, applicants can ask for a review of the decision. They can still get information and help from an LAC or early childhood partner to access supports and services in their community.

4. Creating Your NDIS Plan

Once approved, the next step is to work with an NDIS planner to create a personalised plan. This plan will outline:

  • The types of support and services needed.

  • Goals and outcomes for the future.

  • How the NDIS will fund these supports and services.

5. Plan Management Options

At this point, individuals can choose how they want to manage their NDIS funding. Options include:

  • Self-Managed: Manage the plan and funding independently.

  • Plan-Managed: Choosing a Plan Manager like us at Pacific Plan Management means you don’t have to worry. We will manage your funds and pay providers for you, all free of charge.

  • NDIA-Managed: The NDIA manages the funding and payments.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Incomplete Documentation: Ensure all necessary medical and supporting documents are included with the application.

  • Not Being Clear About Needs: Be specific about the impact the disability has on daily life to help the NDIS determine appropriate support.

Applying for the NDIS may feel overwhelming, but with the right information and support, the process can be much easier.
